This is a Galileo thermometer. I was having fun making things shiny and reflective, and I got one of these last week, so it looked like a fun challenge to model.
This thermometer works because of the expansion and contraction of the glass and air when the temperature changes. Each of the balls will float when the temperature is low enough, and will sink when the temperature is high enough.
